Genius Child: Portia White at Town Hall

This year marks 75 years since celebrated Nova Scotian contralto Portia White made her NYC debut at Town Hall in 1944 – it was only after her massive success with this concert that White was permitted to sing in many previously race-restricted concert halls back home. This special presentation recreates White's historic NYC concert featuring works by Thomas André Campra, Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, and Florence B. Price, as well as spirituals and text by African American poet Langston Hughes. The Grammy Award-winning soprano Harolyn Blackwell is accompanied by prize-winning pianist Daniel Zelibor. Cette année marque le 75e anniversaire des débuts de Portia White, célèbre contralto afro-néo-écossaise, le 13 mars 1944, au Town Hall de New York. Ce n'est qu'après avoir recueilli les éloges de ce récital historique que Portia White a été autorisée à chanter dans de nombreuses salles de concert en Nouvelle-Écosse, ce qui lui était auparavant interdit en raison de sa race. Ce concert exceptionnel recréera ce moment historique de Portia White à New York autour, notamment, d'œuvres de Thomas André Campra, Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, et Florence B. Price, ainsi que de spirituals et des  textes du poète afro-américain Langston Hughes. La soprano Harolyn Blackwell, lauréate d'un prix Grammy, sera accompagnée par le pianiste Daniel Zelibor.
